Kwai Choong and Piang Fah

Phang Piang Fah

Continued with scouting in MBSKL after the second world and rekindled the scouting spirit in MBSKL. During his tenure as Group Scoutmaster, 10th KL was merged with 15th KL to form the enlarged 10th Kuala Lumpur Air Scout Group.

His nurture of the boys produced the successors of many scout leaders in 10th Group.

MBSKL “lost” Piang Fah to the Jalan Kuantan School on his promotion as headmaster to that school. His love was still for 10th Group where he returned often and delivered many a yarns to the younger generations.

Piang Fah did us proud when he was appointed the Camp Chief of Selangor.

Piang Fah went home on 2006.

Liu Kwai Choong

Succeeded Piang Fah as Group Scout Master in 1962 whilst a teacher in the MBS primary school and continued on when transferred to the secondary school. Many years of MBS scouts benefitted from his training, camps and journeys he initiated.

Kwai Choong is best remembered for giving birth to the idea of 10th Group’s den. He is credited with raising the clarion call to his peers and charges for a permanent home for 10th Group.

With his leadership, permission was granted by the school authorities for the site. The fund raising led by Kwai Choong raised more than RM150,000 to build the den.

10th Group is proud to name the den after our GSM who has spent more than 50 years with the group.

Logbook

The event started off with flag break like what we do during our regular scout meetings. Captain (R) Ho Fooi, the organizing chairman of this event welcomed the guests and the investiture of honorary scouts is started.

The purpose of this investiture is to welcome the honorary scouts into the brotherhood of scouting. They have been obeying the scout laws,  joining the scouts for activities like camps and hikes. For a myriad of reasons, they did not get a chance to be a scout. The idea of this investiture is originated from Mr. Liu Kwai Choong, the key person of this event.

The Group Scoutmaster Wan Heng Yuen conducted the investiture by reciting the scout promise which is followed by the honorary scouts. The 10th KL scarves are then put on the honorary scouts and the Tenderfoot Badge (Lencana Keahlian) pinned on their shirt.

Dedication speeches are given by Captain (R) Ho Fooi, Mr. Chu Tham Sang, Mr. Charlie Choong and Dr. Wong Tuck Meng. All of them talked about the leadership, commitment and contributions of Mr. Liu Kwai Choong to the group.  Mr. Liu Kwai Choong is the one who came out with the idea to build the Scout Den, now known as Kwai Choong Den with the main activity hall, Piang Fah Hall, named after late Mr. Phang Piang Fah.

Days before this event, Mr. Liu Kwai Choong was interviewed by the New Straits Times to profile him in the newspaper. It was published on the 6th of December. The story of Mr. Liu Kwai Choong is available  here. This online pages do not carry all the photographs. The original pages in the newspaper are here: page 1 page 2.

Several old scouts gave testimonials  on Mr. Phang and Mr. Liu.

After that, this event is continued by acceptance speeches by Mr. Liu and Ms. Phang, followed by unveiling the plaques symbolizing the dedication ceremony of the Scout Den and the main activity hall as completed. Last but not least, dinner was served to the guests to warm their stomachs.

The organizing committee would like to acknowledge to all who helped out in this event full heartedly and of course thanks to the guests who attended.

Malaysia Dog Day Duty [June 28, 2009]

June 28th, 2009 Maverick No comments

Puppy.com.my is the organizer of this whole event.

Okay so the event starts at 10am so we have to gather at the scout den at 9am. Was planning to move to Chin Woo hill where the event was held by 9.30am but many were late. And we chose to wait.

And at 9.45am, we have less than 10 men as opposed to the expected 23. Despite that, we moved on anyway, hoping that the rest will turn up later. Probably they were stuck in some jam caused by the KL Marathon and a Bomba event at our dear neighbour school.

*Walks up the hill*

*Lots of cars*

*Meets the organizer*

*He gasped at our puny turnout*

Anyway, work starts. Me and Fuat Wai were assigned to be the frontmen. Fronting lots of cars at the bottom of the hill………..The others went into the stadium to help the competitions.

Okay so we were given the task to firewall the incoming traffic because the parking lots are all filled up. We had to direct every car that bore the intention to run us down, to some other parking lots. Sounds easy.

Man I tell you, some drivers are so “assertive”. So we let them through la. Anyway our firewall got breached a few times because some cars managed to zip past us by roaring their engine onto the lane with opposing traffic. Totally disregarding us. Respect man. *Salutes*

Some of them even funnier. Told them there’s no more space to park their car, so he nods and drives into our school. Next thing you know, he comes back, this time faster! And there you go, he’s behind you. Totally pwn3d us man……..We must be lousier than Windows XP’s Firewall…

Anyway.

After this, we went into the air-conditioned stadium to check out the athlete dogs. Most of them look adorable, and miraculously they don’t seem to shit in the stadium like they do on the tar roads! Too cold probably?

After all that competition, cleanup time~ Packed stuffs for them, they gave us some goodies. And we were heading home already.

Overall, nice experience.

  • Got to deal with various drivers with all kinds of personalities and looks. Yup. Some were a pretty sight.
  • Saw many dogs and got to know what kind of things that their owners make them wear!
  • Lastly, it doesn’t smell like a pet shop!!! Thank God!

AND. I think those who managed the traffic have improved on their assertiveness too, no idea what was the magnitude of improvement though. Good experience for them anyway, first-hand experience of the real world that awaits us upon graduation from our studies.

Lastly. Pictures. None unfortunately =(( See how dependent we are on our dear Zhi Hao? Good luck in Malacca =D

Woodbadge Introduction Course [May 23, 2009]

May 23rd, 2009 Maverick No comments

The course is done in MBS! (as you can see from the photos la)

So there are 7 modules, each session is being briefed by a trainer.

  1. Objective and Principles in Scouting
  2. The Scout Promise and Scout Laws
  3. The Religion Element
  4. Records and Documents in a Group
  5. Woodbadge Training Scheme
  6. History in Scouting
  7. The Scout Uniform

There was a briefing session on today’s course by Jamal. Shortly after that, the course starts.

At about 9 or 9.30am, first trainer started on the objective and principles. This is really a refreshing topic as it reminds us on our objective in scouting. The main point is, boys have fun, but there is a greater cause ahead which we would have to achieve together as a Scout.

*Name Pending*

10am was our break time!

Then it’s back to the lectures =(

2nd module: On the element of religion in Scouting. This guy, gave very brief talk on this, using up 15 minutes of the 45 that he was allocated.

Main point: Practice your religion, not just have it in name. Advise and guide your fellow human beings that are deviant followers of a religion. Lastly, another stress that every Scout must have a religion because of the Scout Promise.

*name pending*

3rd module starts: Very detailed explanation on the Scout Promise and Scout Law, I think he should have more time on this in order to completely remind us all about the Promise that binds us all, and a deeper insight into our Scout Law. It’s not just words in your logbook that you read and forget about!

4th module was on recordkeeping and logging in a scout troop. Jamal’s the trainer for this session. So he gave examples of how and what documents we’re supposed to have in a group. Sounds a lot!

5th module: A briefing on the woodbadge training scheme. He talks very fluently. Really. Good for briefing…haha

6th module: Our Scouter and ASC Gary Lee! Some video on Baden Powell’s last message and a few songs. Then it was Q&A session where topics discussed were Independent Scouts vs WOSM, Patrol System etc.

7th module: On the uniform. One guy and a girl were summoned to the front of the class to show their uniform……………….

Weinan says girl is cute =P

After all that, there’s a general Q&A session to answer any curiosity inside us.

Okay enough of this post. For more pictures you gotta visit this page.

Very informative course. But the catch is, this is an introduction course which is also tailored to cater for teachers who want to train boy scouts. Which means, if this is informative, we are lacking lots of knowledge.

Need to pull our socks up =(

Historical Rover Luncheon [Jan 2007]

January 26th, 2007 Maverick No comments

It just had to begin after so many years of stagnant activity and when was the last time since the rover crew had such erm….LUNCHEON?? Well, I do not know for whatever sakes it takes.

You see, I’m not in a mood of checking up dictionaries or finding for the definition of the word (Luncheon) and I pretty much do not have the time for it. So I AM taking that it has SOMETHING to do with those luncheon meats you get in cans. By the way, I know it also has something to do with lunch but who DOESN’T take them for breakfasts?

Anyway, the 2006 Form 5 scouts just had to have some get-together before the Luncheon and so we ended up arriving at school a pretty 3 hours ahead of the lunch, I mean, The Luncheon. What did we do? We entertain ourselves. No, we let the boys entertain us (and please do not get carried away with your imaginations). …… and enough about that…to the Luncheon please…

THE LUNCHEON

As enthusiastic as ever, everyone moved to the Pik Wah Restaurant and Hsien Loong got to order the foods. But then the food never came. That’s because we got a call from someone and we had to cancel that particular lunch in that restaurant so that we could try out something better than peanuts, soy sauce, tea and chilli that cost RM 26!!

So the “drivers” brought us to Salak Selatan to devour the Bak Kut Teh in that shop named “Stone Rice Something”. Don’t ask me, maybe it was due to their dehydrated rice. And we had some nice food there, so NICE that I do not remember what I ate.

THE AGENDA

Hopefully, I will somehow remember the EXACT response from Charlie after Heng Yuen joked about his car getting summon slips.

Anyway, the whole lunch meet was about the future of the Rovers. But then, first things first, we had to get all the Rovers in contact so we appointed someone to be in charge of it. He’ll be putting contacts into a database so he’ll be some kind of contacts-person, really.

Just about then, the next agenda slips in. That would be about the camp that we are going to have sometime this year. And so, a few more blokes got chosen and agreed to be in the planning committee, planning for our next Rovers Camp.

Prior to that, we have decided to have a meeting on January 26, 2007 (Saturday) so that we could discuss our next camp. First we decided on having just the camp committee members to come. But then later, we decided that anybody who is interested could come to the camp-planning meeting.

Right after that, then came a minor problem which may in turn lead to a MAJOR problem! Nothing actually, just the question of when and how often are we to meet together after that lunch. I mean, like, there’s not gonna be anymore “free lunch”, right? If I’m wrong, then probably the problem has been solved. Anyways, it’s just going to be once a month, on one of the sunny Saturdays.

****************************************************************************

Warning: This is a sequel and has nothing to do with anything above.

So after the Luncheon, we all made a move back to our alma mater, the Monkey Boys School. So what was going on in our monkey minds? Yes, climbing trees. What trees? Rambutan trees!!!

Yes, I mean, no. Yes because we went for those trees and No, because we didn’t actually climb it. 21st generation monkeys are never that dumb anymore, so we monkeys used cutters installed on one end of a long pole and went along collecting our share of Rambutans.

Little did we know, the monkeys in us were silently banging onto our hearts, wishing we could’ve just climbed onto those trees and pluck the juicy Rambutans right off those branches! *drooools*

So after that, we all had to return to our monkey base, the MBS. This time, Dominic drove the car! Don’t get me started, but I just can’t stop spilling the beans on how many times the keep “died fire“. No offense here, hope you don’t get to read this post. Anyway, I canceled the words, right? Yes I did. Later :)
