Frasers Hill Camp [Nov 14-16]

November 16th, 2003 No comments

Story taken from here.

Annual camp in Frasers Hill, or annual trip like Gary said, we didn’t have to sleep in tents, instead, on tables. Yes, camped in a Chinese primary school.
First lunch, then dinner. We learnt cooking from Chef Wan, no kidding! Then we sang songs at throughout the night, while experiencing the occasional cold breeze.

Oh yeah, night games. Fight for the candle!

**************************************************************************

Headed for the jungle treks. Went to Bishop’s Trail. Along the trail, there were diggings belonging to the wild boars. What do they eat anyway? Bamboo shoots or earthworms? Either way, we got stuck halfway because I was behind and those people in front were blocking my way, and something in front of them was blocking them too, either way, I’m stuck.

We had to find our way out. Just about then, Heng Yuen said he heard cars nearby so he suggested Au Yong to race with Wai Hoe to the top. Haha! Au Yong lost! Anyway, they found a road, as in, cement and tar covered ones. So they began helping each of use up. We then walked along it for some distance and decided to fill our tummies at the rocky roadside. I cut my first small tree and had to kill it and chop it to three parts and made it the stand for our patrol’s cooking pot. Pity that tree…

I don’t know when was it when we played football….I forgot

Some MORE old boys came along at night (and opened up some red wine, I guess), and started talking about our trek that morning, said it was good or somewhat, I can’t remember. Served them some red bean (or sweet potato) (soup?) and proceeded to sleep.

******************************************************************************

Rise and shine! Well, I can’t seem to. But I had to anyway, and also run bare from waist-up for lazing in my sleeping bag.

Fine morning on that day, so everyone headed out for the Jeriau waterfall, but we had to walk for quite some distance downhill. Sheesh, my shoe was too small at that time and I had to walk without shoes for the last few hundred of metres. And before I forget, some of us prepared some curry and rice for the trip to the waterfall.

TTT

Weinan probably din wanna get wet

Me and Weng Hoe

After the lunch, everyone was full and the old boys further spoilt us by giving us a ride back UPHILL to the school we stayed, (I think it was raining and they didn’t want us to get wet). But then, no more rests yet as we had another work to finish. Each patrol was given an amount of money (RM4 per head in the patrol) but I don’t know why Swift and Gannet (who combined) got RM 25 for 6 person. What to do with the money? Cook la. No, buy something to cook for dinner larr, of course from the wet market in town.

Dinner’s over and we played Uno cards and had some fun in arm wrestles, haha, Kuan Jhun hadn’t beat me and neither have I, but nevermind. Then, after all that years in my life, I finally had the chance to listen to some ghost stories. So Foon Yuen Kit shared his scary experience, made up or whatever, it was scary!!!

listening attentively to the ghost stories

Boo! Later, he asked for volunteers to put a spoon in a bathroom (it was dark) and another fella to take it back. For your information, I had to travel 50 metres in total pitch darkness and conquer my fear of darkness (if I ever had one), to put the spoon there.

******************************************************************************

On the next day, we had a cooking competition, each patrol had to cook Meehoon and the Swift Patrol lost to Hawk Patrol. MUahahahahah! And Hawk members were given a chocolate bar (each?).

Gannet+Swift

Eagle+Falcon

Took a group photo….and

Then we set out for KL……

Recipe: Fried Rice

  1. Garlic is fried
  2. followed by chicken meat
  3. than egg
  4. add rice
  5. add sugar (wtf?)
  6. add salt
  7. add gravy
  8. serve

That’s all.

Commonwealth Park Camp [Aug 23-24]

Story taken from here.

August 23-24, 2003: First camp out of school?

Gathered at school so that scouters and scoutmasters could finish monetary matters (who owes who and all that). Set out towards the Puduraya bus stathion. Then, a ride to Rawang by an air-conditioned bus (I believe it was) to Rawang, and right into the Commonwealth Park! ^^

Camp fees was Rm 20.00 including the bus fare. Each boy brought about 250 grams of rice.

Unloaded then tents, supplies and rations from both the bus and the 4WDs, hee…..

Huge cars to carry our stuffs with…:)

Probably no one knew what to do, so they played “JKR”

After a short brief, each patrol had their respective job to complete…I believe it was pitching the tents…haha..poor memory…………………………..=_=’

Here’s our campsite

and:

Here’s the stream

Still not pitching the tent????

I forgot.

BUT I sure do remember one thing! Useless Au Yong again from Swift, you see, Swift was in charge of cooking Maggi noodles for lunch and you know what? He made a pot of slimy earthworms in yellow, no la, just slimy, soooo slimy that one couldn’t even slurp it up! I could never have forgotten that slimiest noodle he made, it was plain horrible but I had to admit, I was pretty hungry then, so I practically made no noise, only voicing out my disgust a very well four years later……so sorry Min Hao….

Took some rest and barely realized that Josiah was crying about a leech he saw, so we comforted him by puring salts on that leechy leech. O.O, look how it squirms! With blood oozing out of it! :-s

By afternoon, we then went to a field above our campsite. That field had a lot of bamboo trees surrounding it and we had a football game there as well as tug-of-war cum pass-ball.

After that, everyone “fell back” to our campsite and as usual, that Au Yong had nothing else better to do than trying to go back down to the campsite through another steeper path. Its slippery laterite was to thank for! Haha, it made him lose his balance and slided down the muddy “ramp”, and Ta-Da!! Pretty shorts in brown, fresh and wet!

Gathered piles of firewood, Kuan Jhun had the opportunity to stack up the firewood into a pyramid-shaped thing. While KJ was busy, some old boys brought their children to our campsite and requested assistance from us to put up a weird tent (that they’ve personally brought). At the same time, Siow Yung Kun’s parents came and took him back……..While then, Heng Yuen taught me how to use an axe, while Gary taught me not to hog the axe because the others wouldn’t be learning something. Lol. =_=’”

Did Ms. Raguna come? I guess so. I could swear I was having my dinner with her and escorting her to the toilet with a flashlight, you’d get it. Otherwise, it could be something else. Okay, enough! It’s getting eerie here..it was sooooo dark

Campfire started as Kwai Choong..um……started it… We played games, Charlie taught us everything he knew about the “Elephant Dance”. Oh yeah, Ms. Raguna was dancing with Gary while we sang Zulu Zulu, how could I ever forget the three of them swaying together? XD

Next came the cookie jar:

Gary sings: Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?

Group sings: Seong Bin stole the cookie from the cookie jar!

Seong Bin: Not me!

Group: Yes you!

Seong Bin: Couldn’t be!

Group: Then who?

Seong Bin: Au Yong stole the cookie from the cookie jar!

Au Yong: Not me!

Group: Yes you!

Au Yong: Couldn’t blah…b..b..BE!……..damn

Haha! Serves him right! He got punished for losing the game! At last, some fun stuff to watch. We were all instructed to watch a comedy performed by the group of losers but not make a sound or laugh at them or else they’ll get away with the punishment. We crossed our heart and never made a sound, and they were then forced to perform the French Dance, each of them grabbing another’s shoulders and started swinging up their legs! Who could’ve forgotten such wonderful events? Those losers include Kuan Jhun, Jega, Bosco and Sean. Wow, four Swifts and 1 Gannet. Serves Swift Patrol right in the face!

Actually, it’s not like we never made a sound ever since, we just couldn’t help it because the KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken * or was it Kentucky Fried Cockroaches? I could never tell.*) have arrived from a Samaritan who knows what it’s like to stay warm and full. But then, we had to sing Old Kentucky Home before getting our share of KFC, just before hitting the bed, I mean, sleeping bag.

Late night, couldn’t sleep, so some of us decided to light up a fire but careless Josiah hurt his left eye with a spark from the match. Later we decided to take out our portable stove and started boiling some coffee, so that I could SLEEP! Later on. We had a PLC with Gary, I showed him my Usaha Journey Log. He said there was room for improvement and I wonder why my journey log was still in the same state till now.

Lights out!:(

***************************************************

Haha! It’s Swift’s turn to make breakfast for the troop while the latter went for morning exercises. I bet they would have done some pretty silly mistake again, after that slimy Maggi Mee!

And guess what, right after breakfast, GSM, Heng Yuen found some bread tags on the ground left by whoever-made-the-breakfast. So, the whole Swift Patrol had to hang those bread tags on their hairs. Haha, serves them right for littering!

After that, we proceeded to the canopy walk after having ourselves covered by mosquito repellent..Who steps the leeches on the jungle walk? Sagesegaran sang that. The bridge was safe but it was wobbly and shaky, thus convincing that it was indeed a safe but unstable bridge. Well, no one maintained it, I wonder if it’s still hanging there?

Gannet’s turn to cook lunch! Forgot what they cooked.

After lunch, we strike-d the tents and cleaned up the campsite. While we were preparing for an investiture, Mother Nature suddenly let out a heavy downpour…pity those scouts whose cheap haversacks’ colour came off and dyed their uniform green. Lol.

Still, we managed to make it back to the school because there were drivers. I’m so thankful, they could’ve preferred us to take our own ride, which they didn’t.

5.00pm: Alive and well in school. Over and out.

School Camp [Jul 19-20]

Story taken from here.

July 19-20, 2003: 1st School Camp With New PL/PS

Let’s see. Um..I couldn’t recall half the camp…..

Anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words…so, you get what I mean. I don’t know why the pictures are 2004 but I don’t remember camping in school in 2004, but the I remember seeing Mr. Loo in one of the camps I went. Or maybe some pictures don’t belong here… I could never tell.

Firstly, ignore the February 14 2004.

We had games, some knotting games:

Knotting Session (Eagle Patrol)
Eagle Patrol

Knotting Session (Merlin Patrol)
Merlin Patrol

Knotting Session (Hawk Patrol)
Hawk Patrol

Knotting Session (Gannet Patrol)
Gannet Patrol (Cute faces)

There was a knotting competition by the way, Gary asked us all to tie a Square Knot that no one knew, but I’d never forget that Square Knot. And then there were more knotting games….scouting tug-of-war….a game dominated by wit and agility, not weight nor strength!

Briefing Something
Briefing something…

Now I remember Gary asking Sean from Swift and Neoh Ke Chean from Merlin to challenge each other at the tug-of-war. Guess what? Sean is a leftie and Ke Chean is heavy, so the game was played with only left hands. And Gary gave the Swift Patrol some flexibility, which is the permission to bet their points! Any Amount!!

Too bad that Min Hao merely put a bet of 20 points. T_T

We had more games: one of them involving crossing 2 fellas’ hands to transport someone, and the other involved everyone carrying everyone. I’d pity Min Hao during that game, because he had to carry Chuan Choon Ming who was twice as heavy as the former! He hurt his little back and I remember Fred helped him”fix” his back…Me? I manage to carry lotsa people and witness poor Law Wai Kar carrying Wan Wei Liam! o.O”

A classical “Simon Says” but wasn’t Simon

PLs in front with members

Tactical team discussion

The night is young…………………..

Freddie explained Yarn No.1 by Baden Powell, saying how important real scouts and/or frontiersmen are to the world. Now that Siew Kow was there too, he told some yarns too, which I can’t quite remember. Nevertheless, I can barely remember Kwai Choong teaching us how 10th KL scouts should clap, and it sure was fun because the claps vary in decibels and pace, unlike any other conventional palms that hit each other.><

The night is STILL young……………………

At night, way after midnight, still at night anyway, the 6 Patrol Leaders:

  • Au Yong Min Hao (Swift)
  • Chin Seong Bin (Eagle)
  • Choy Weng Hoe (Falcon)
  • Law Wai Kar (Merlin)
  • Siow Cheng Yiap (Hawk)
  • Wong Kuan Jhun (Gannet)

I doubt they were all there though.
to erm….elect a troop leader. After some long discussion with the scoutmasters present (was it only Choo? I forgot), each PL had to vote for 2 of their peer PLs, so that the one who gets the most vote will get the great honour of being the Troop Leader! Everybody votes….and…..guess who? It was Au Yong Min Hao from the Swift Patrol! But the agenda of the meeting was not achieved because that numbskull Au Yong Min Hao had to sorta…..reject the position as a Troop Leader! I seriously do not know what was up with him on that night, with lame excuses like:

-can’t cope with two posts at the same time larr, because got Junior Chair to take care also larr…

Lame! Lame! Lame! Lame! Lame! HE could’ve plucked some courage and took up that post to further improve himself, but I guess he chose to chicken out….poor little boy…. AND because of him, each PL had to take turns to lead the boys for two weeks, nothing wrong about that, nothing negative either, just merely stating it out.

Then it rained heavily and tents were flooded…gee wth, we had to sleep in a classroom instead..

Sleeping in Classroom
Dreamwalkzz

Overgrown
Overgrown legs ><

Either I’m weird or paranormal, I can still remember Jega hurting his finger from either the tent’s zip or cutting vegetables. Josiah (long time traitor) hurt his finger while trying to zip up his pants?? No, I think it was the tent’s zip too. Me? No, nothing, just some cut blessed by the almighty Parang.

******************************************************************************

And I’ll never forget Athi bathing together with Dinesh and was forced to fall in half naked!
On the next day, we had an investiture.

Putting on the scarves

Shaking Hands

Right after that, Kwai Choong told us about the next camp in Commanwealth Park, Rawang on the 23th August 2003. Clever old man, he then advised us to study hard so that our parents would allow us to go for the camp. (If I was wrong, maybe he said, “Study hard! Or you can’t come!”)

Breakoff!

Ps: The chronology feels a bit jamais vu, so if it wasn’t supposed to be like that please inform me immediately, via email: auyongminhao _at_ gmail.com (reconstruct address please)

Otherwise, leave a comment. Thank you.

School Camp [May 23-25]

May 25th, 2003 No comments

Story taken from here.

School camp + PL/PS selection camp

This camp had alot of old boys, I remember (unless I keep remembering the wrong thing). The camp started at evening on Friday 23. I was late for the camp and everyone had already started scraping rice from the pots to their mouths. Late, and I got reprimanded for being a late PL. T_T

Now then, all of us scouts were reshuffled and divided into four patrols with names not known to mankind. I do not know the process as I was late, so may someone elaborate on this(?)

But then, let’s have the pictures tell the stories, I’ll just narrate as I go:

Seniors looking on…Freddie aside

The old spirit awakens (or it turns young)

Songs session

Kuan Jhun was so short

Weng Hoe, Zhi Hao, Weinan and Wai Kar

Yeo Eng Kang, Amrith and I-forgot-them

Old and young.

Charlie teaches the group on (round songs?)

Another group needs another expert

******************************************************************************

The next day, it was a Saturday.

Having some fun playing the Poison Ball

Whoever gets hit is a rotten egg

Captain Wong aeromodels our brain

Group Photos!!

Guess the seniors had to have their private space

I remember this camp quite well. That night, when there were too many mosquitoes in my patrol’s tent, I decided to move into my neighbour tent, we couldn’t sleep anyway. Then, Freddie saw us and had us sit around him and he began talking. That’s when I learn to sneak if I want, but just don’t get caught. Rules can be broken, but one must pay the consequences, or else, stay out of it or don’t ever get caught! Funny how small things work to their top, one simple question like “How many of you here are going to stay?”, made me keep that promise. Of course, after he gave me a great deal, he bought us a box of mosquito coil! How? Err…Someone sneaked out of the school in the middle of the night and went to 7 Eleven

And I’ll never forget Athi bathing together with Dinesh and was forced to fall in half naked!

Now here’s the selection process: Each of us were to go through tests which include:

  1. General scouting knowledge
  2. Leadership qualities
  3. Skills

Leadership test.

This was the general knowledge test

The Kim’s game

I couldn’t remember much then…..but it sure was late after the test. And when we’re done, there’s the home waiting for us.
