Campfire Work Camp 2 + CampFire 2009 [Dec 18-19, 2009]

December 20th, 2009 No comments

18th December 2009

Campfire Work Camp 2@MBSSKL starts at 9 am. The morning was largely devoted to rehearsing of the Zulu dance and planning of sketch by the boy scouts.

Practicing Zulu Dance

There were discussions and practices with a few slots of relax-yourselves-period. At about 5 pm, we played a game. The game is consisted of two groups which will compete against each other. Participants of each team hold a straw in their mouths and pass a single rubber band to each other using only the straw held in the mouth. If the rubber band drops, the team will have the length of their straws deducted. This game continues till whichever team has such short length of straw till it is impossible to play anymore. To start, each team sends a person to answer any question. The person who answered wrongly has to have his team start the game. Right after that, I cannot remember what happened but the activities following after included Zulu and Hakka dance in the rain, topless. Dinner was an unhealthy meal with too much oyster sauce in the cabbages. We could only taste oyster sauce and saltiness…special credits to Great Chefs of Boy Scouts. Materials preparation for the Zulu dance which includes the garlands, headband and hand band, started at evening, and all was going fine till we went out of materials.

Making of Zulu garlands

Heng Yuen taught a new song, Green Grow the Rushes Ho. Twelve people were selected to sing the song. It was to be one of the round songs during tomorrow’s campfire. Few people sang like ….you-know-how. Voon Keong and William did the next day’s schedule. As it was raining, there were no night games. Lights out at 2 am

19th December 2009

Morning alarm set at 8.00 am, but many were already awaked by 7.30 am. We had a breakfast of bread, eggs, fried mackerel with salted black beans and tuna! Here, I encountered some weird beings that stuffed eggs, mackerel, salted black beans and tuna together…and eat them. I tried it and it tasted horrible, not to mention the oily fishy smell that clashes sickly with the tasteless egg. Next, we all went to the courtyard to do some practices on our performances. We also practiced singing round songs. Among them are Ging Gang Gooli, The Night is Young, D’ Old Folks at Home, Green Grow the Rushes Ho, My Grandfather’s Clock and the last 6 songs, namely Wish Me Luck, Good Night Brothers, Maori Farewell, Auld Lang Syne, Scouting Friendship and Taps. After that, some boys cooked lunch while the others prepared the materials for the Zulu dance. Those involved in the sketch did their rehearsal. The full rehearsal planned at 3.00 pm was delayed till 5 pm, and excludes the Hakka dance. Right after that, setup and preparations started. Chairs and the PA system were brought to the courtyard. Firewood was found and chopped.

Preparing the fire

After that, the boy scouts went to cook fried rice for dinner. Wing Wey’s father brought curry puffs, rolls and tarts for supper. Soon, the campfire starts with Four Torch Bearers, Een-Gon-Yama and the opening songs(Blaze Away, Keep the Home Fires Burning, There’s A Long Long Trail, She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain, Working on the Railroad, A Bear Went Over the Mountain, I’ve Got Sixpence and There’s Where My Money Goes).

Lighting of Fire

This was followed by Hakka from the Rovers and seniors, round songs and a game called Blow Wind, Blow! It was a really fun game that most of us had played since childhood and Gary always got to stand in the middle! After that was the Zulu dance by the Boy Scouts and the Rhythm of the Island.

Zulu Dance

Soon, the campfire ends with the last 6 songs and supper. Delicious supper…and I can’t stop thinking about the rolls…After that, everyone helped to clean up the courtyard and the scout den. Nearly none of us is staying the night and everyone’s packing. Some leftover foods are taken back.

Thanks to those who attended this camp. May the next campfire be merrier and bring more glory to 10th KL.

ACS Singapore Visit 10th KL [Dec 16, 2009]

December 17th, 2009 No comments

Once again, we were playing host to our counterparts from Singapore. As part of the Tampines District Overseas Exchange Program 2009, several groups including ours have been selected by the national HQ to take part. We were to exchange scouting ideas and thoughts to further improve each and every aspect of it.

We had sessions with 2 troops from Singapore. We taught them a favorite game of ours which is 1-on-1 tug-of-war. We even had a friendly match with them. Milo and banana cakes were served to fulfill everyone’s hunger temporarily. In between all of these, Gary Lee, talked to them about the Scout Den and gave them a comprehensive idea of how scouting is conducted in our group. Laughs and ideas were exchanged as they had their stories to relate as well.

Before we said our goodbyes and parted ways, we managed to exchange some badges which turned out to be a relative success as many faces were seen smiling after it.

School Camp [Jul 19-20]

July 19-20, 2003: 1st School Camp With New PL/PS

Let’s see. Um..I couldn’t recall half the camp…..

Anyway, a picture is worth a thousand words…so, you get what I mean. I don’t know why the pictures are 2004 but I don’t remember camping in school in 2004, but the I remember seeing Mr. Loo in one of the camps I went. Or maybe some pictures don’t belong here… I could never tell.

Firstly, ignore the February 14 2004.

We had games, some knotting games:

Knotting Session (Eagle Patrol)
Eagle Patrol

Knotting Session (Merlin Patrol)
Merlin Patrol

Knotting Session (Hawk Patrol)
Hawk Patrol

Knotting Session (Gannet Patrol)
Gannet Patrol (Cute faces)

There was a knotting competition by the way, Gary asked us all to tie a Square Knot that no one knew, but I’d never forget that Square Knot. And then there were more knotting games….scouting tug-of-war….a game dominated by wit and agility, not weight nor strength!

Briefing Something
Briefing something…

Now I remember Gary asking Sean from Swift and Neoh Ke Chean from Merlin to challenge each other at the tug-of-war. Guess what? Sean is a leftie and Ke Chean is heavy, so the game was played with only left hands. And Gary gave the Swift Patrol some flexibility, which is the permission to bet their points! Any Amount!!

Too bad that Min Hao merely put a bet of 20 points. T_T

We had more games: one of them involving crossing 2 fellas’ hands to transport someone, and the other involved everyone carrying everyone. I’d pity Min Hao during that game, because he had to carry Chuan Choon Ming who was twice as heavy as the former! He hurt his little back and I remember Fred helped him”fix” his back…Me? I manage to carry lotsa people and witness poor Law Wai Kar carrying Wan Wei Liam! o.O”

A classical “Simon Says” but wasn’t Simon

Tactical team discussion

The night is young…………………..

Freddie explained Yarn No.1 by Baden Powell, saying how important real scouts and/or frontiersmen are to the world. Now that Siew Kow was there too, he told some yarns too, which I can’t quite remember. Nevertheless, I can barely remember Kwai Choong teaching us how 10th KL scouts should clap, and it sure was fun because the claps vary in decibels and pace, unlike any other conventional palms that hit each other.><

The night is STILL young……………………

At night, way after midnight, still at night anyway, the 6 Patrol Leaders:

  • Au Yong Min Hao (Swift)
  • Chin Seong Bin (Eagle)
  • Choy Weng Hoe (Falcon)
  • Law Wai Kar (Merlin)
  • Siow Cheng Yiap (Hawk)
  • Wong Kuan Jhun (Gannet)

I doubt they were all there though.
to erm….elect a troop leader. After some long discussion with the scoutmasters present (was it only Choo? I forgot), each PL had to vote for 2 of their peer PLs, so that the one who gets the most vote will get the great honour of being the Troop Leader! Everybody votes….and…..guess who? It was Au Yong Min Hao from the Swift Patrol! But the agenda of the meeting was not achieved because that numbskull Au Yong Min Hao had to sorta…..reject the position as a Troop Leader! I seriously do not know what was up with him on that night, with lame excuses like:

-can’t cope with two posts at the same time larr, because got Junior Chair to take care also larr…

Lame! Lame! Lame! Lame! Lame! HE could’ve plucked some courage and took up that post to further improve himself, but I guess he chose to chicken out….poor little boy…. AND because of him, each PL had to take turns to lead the boys for two weeks, nothing wrong about that, nothing negative either, just merely stating it out.

Then it rained heavily and tents were flooded…gee wth, we had to sleep in a classroom instead..

Sleeping in Classroom

Overgrown
Overgrown legs ><

Either I’m weird or paranormal, I can still remember Jega hurting his finger from either the tent’s zip or cutting vegetables. Josiah (long time traitor) hurt his finger while trying to zip up his pants?? No, I think it was the tent’s zip too. Me? No, nothing, just some cut blessed by the almighty Parang.

******************************************************************************

And I’ll never forget Athi bathing together with Dinesh and was forced to fall in half naked!
On the next day, we had an investiture.

Putting on the scarves

Shaking Hands

Right after that, Kwai Choong told us about the next camp in Commanwealth Park, Rawang on the 23th August 2003. Clever old man, he then advised us to study hard so that our parents would allow us to go for the camp. (If I was wrong, maybe he said, “Study hard! Or you can’t come!”)

Breakoff!

Ps: The chronology feels a bit jamais vu, so if it wasn’t supposed to be like that please inform me immediately, via email: auyongminhao _at_ gmail.com (reconstruct address please)

Otherwise, leave a comment. Thank you.

School Camp [May 23-25]

Story taken from here.

School camp + PL/PS selection camp

This camp had alot of old boys, I remember (unless I keep remembering the wrong thing). The camp started at evening on Friday 23. I was late for the camp and everyone had already started scraping rice from the pots to their mouths. Late, and I got reprimanded for being a late PL. T_T

Now then, all of us scouts were reshuffled and divided into four patrols with names not known to mankind. I do not know the process as I was late, so may someone elaborate on this(?)

But then, let’s have the pictures tell the stories, I’ll just narrate as I go:

Seniors looking on…Freddie aside

The old spirit awakens (or it turns young)

Songs session

Kuan Jhun was so short

Weng Hoe, Zhi Hao, Weinan and Wai Kar

Yeo Eng Kang, Amrith and I-forgot-them

Old and young.

Charlie teaches the group on (round songs?)

Another group needs another expert

******************************************************************************

The next day, it was a Saturday.

Having some fun playing the Poison Ball

Whoever gets hit is a rotten egg

Captain Wong aeromodels our brain

Group Photos!!

Guess the seniors had to have their private space

I remember this camp quite well. That night, when there were too many mosquitoes in my patrol’s tent, I decided to move into my neighbour tent, we couldn’t sleep anyway. Then, Freddie saw us and had us sit around him and he began talking. That’s when I learn to sneak if I want, but just don’t get caught. Rules can be broken, but one must pay the consequences, or else, stay out of it or don’t ever get caught! Funny how small things work to their top, one simple question like “How many of you here are going to stay?”, made me keep that promise. Of course, after he gave me a great deal, he bought us a box of mosquito coil! How? Err…Someone sneaked out of the school in the middle of the night and went to 7 Eleven

And I’ll never forget Athi bathing together with Dinesh and was forced to fall in half naked!

Now here’s the selection process: Each of us were to go through tests which include:

  1. General scouting knowledge
  2. Leadership qualities
  3. Skills

Leadership test.

This was the general knowledge test

The Kim’s game

I couldn’t remember much then…..but it sure was late after the test. And when we’re done, there’s the home waiting for us.
